iRobot Roomba 690 Review
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I hate vacuuming the floor with a passion. I’ve always been skeptical of these robot vacuum cleaners. At one point in my life, I had one of the original Roombas, and it was terrible, it would always get stuck on things and it didn’t actually clean well at all. Fast forward to now, the Roomba 690 is a major improvement over the previous generations of robotic vacuums. This Roomba can sense obstacles much better than previous version, and the suction actually works!
Getting started with the Roomba 690 is easy, just plug in the charging dock, set up gates that let the Roomba know where not to go, and download the app. Once the app is downloaded, you can sync with the Roomba and schedule cleaning times right from your phone. The robot takes a couple of hours to fully charge, and can clean for about an hour before it needs to return to its “docking bay”. One of the best parts about setting up your Roomba? Getting to choose its name! Yes, you can name your Roomba now, and I chose to call mine “Overlord”.
This model can clean multiple types of floor as well, which was a major selling point for me because in our house, we have wood, linoleum, and carpet flooring. It’s impressive that the Overlord knows when and where to switch floor cleaning “profiles” to support the current flooring.
You do have to be careful the first few times running the Roomba, it does learn about obstacles, but it can hit things pretty hard. I have a flimsy glass table (I know, it’s a terrible design flaw) and this little guy almost took it out at one point. It did learn to avoid it, but it’s better to keep an eye on it the first few passes around fragile items.
The thing that is most impressive about robot vacuums in general is how much time you save in the long run. And how much cleaner your house will be, especially if you only vacuum once every few weeks like I did before I found my Overlord. I’ve even felt like the Roomba is more effective than I am vacuuming. I feel like the overall quality of the cleaning is just as good, if not better than it is when I do it manually. Plus, I’m lazy and I love when I can make a robot do a job that I should be doing.
So, if you hate vacuuming and would rather spend your time doing something you enjoy, a Roomba would be a smart investment. I feel like spending time with my family is more important than wasting an hour or two every week vacuuming the house. This Roomba has already paid for itself in my opinion, and I’ve only had it for a few months now.
This Roomba is on sale at Amazon now for $375. In my opinion, it's worth every penny.
